Cleaning up under the West Ashley live oaks

West Ashley is an easy one for me to like. It’s about 24 miles from my home base in Summerville, just across the Ashley River, so depending on traffic it’s a reasonable drive, and the part of Charleston west of the river has a feel all its own. This isn’t the pine country I live in back in Summerville. Out here it’s live oaks, big moss-draped ones that arch over the streets, and that changes the kind of work people need.

The neighborhoods tell the story. Avondale is full of those 1950s “Designer District” brick bungalows, and West Oak Forest is mid-century homes tucked under a mature canopy. Run out Ashley River Road and Highway 61 and you pass Drayton Hall, Middleton Place and Magnolia Gardens, with the West Ashley Greenway threading through it all. It’s an established, shaded, character-filled place, and it sits flanked by the Ashley and Stono Rivers and their marsh, so there’s a little more moisture in the air than you’d think.

Two things come with all those live oaks: shade and debris. The shade is why house soft washing is my most common call here. Brick and older siding under a heavy canopy grow algae and mildew on the north and shaded sides, and brick especially responds beautifully to a gentle soft wash, the grime lifts and the house looks decades younger without any harsh pressure on old mortar. The debris is why leaf and seasonal cleanup is right behind it. Live oaks don’t drop politely, they shed leaves and drop acorns seemingly all year, and clearing that out of beds, off roofs and out of gutters is steady work in these neighborhoods.

That same shade and oak litter sits on the concrete, so older driveways and walkways out here go green fast, which makes driveway and sidewalk cleaning a regular ask. And because so many of these homes have decks, fences and patios that live under the canopy, deck, fence and patio cleaning is a natural fit, getting the slick green film off boards and pickets before it stains or someone slips.

What I like about West Ashley is that the homes have history and people care about keeping them sharp. That suits the way I work, because I do every job myself and I’m careful with older surfaces. You won’t get a crew rushing through your bungalow, you’ll get me taking the time to do it right.

If you’re anywhere in West Ashley and the oaks have left your siding green, your concrete slick or your yard buried in leaves and acorns, call or text me at 843-530-0702, or send the details through my contact page.
